NCIN for Commissioners and Policy Makers
The Cancer Reform Strategy identified better information and stronger commissioning as two of the key drivers to achieve our goal of world class cancer services. Commissioning of cancer services is complex as there are many different types of cancer and many potential diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for each cancer type. Commissioners need to take account of a wide range of factors to make informed decisions.
NCIN aims to assist commissioners and others involved in managing health services or setting policy to make best use of the information available through our tools and reports.
Tools and publications
The Cancer Commissioning Toolkit is an online library of key cancer information and data which can be easily accessed by commissioners for use in the preparation of their commissioning plans. The Toolkit also incorporates access to the new GP Practice Profiles.
NCIN prepares national, sub-national and cancer type specific analyses in collaboration with partner organisations. These reports cover a range of aspects of cancer and its treatment, including areas of inequality, at cancer network or primary care trust level.
Other resources
Commissioners or policy makers who require information in a specific area may find our work on cross cutting topics helpful, particularly our Cancer Equalities Portal and Local Awareness and Early Diagnosis Baseline Guide.
Commissioners may also be interested in our work defining cancer datasets for collection across the NHS. The NHS contract for acute services requires Trusts to supply the national cancer registration dataset to their regional cancer registry; commissioners have an important role to play in ensuring that the required data are flowing to cancer registries to allow monitoring of the service and to inform future commissioning decisions.
