Local Awareness and Early Diagnosis Baseline Assessments: A Guide for Cancer Networks and Primary Care Trusts

One important aspect of the National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative (NAEDI) is diagnosing cancer earlier; the Cancer Reform Strategy states that late diagnosis has been a major factor contributing to poor cancer survival rates in the UK. Cancer Networks, with Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), are expected to undertake a baseline assessment that will inform Network and PCT Strategic Commissioning Plans to ensure effective progress in this area, based on local health needs.

There was feedback that a more detailed guidance note on the baseline assessment would be helpful. A collaborative project between the National Cancer Action Team and NCIN has produced this document 'Local Awareness and Early Diagnosis Baseline Assessments: A Guide for Cancer Networks and Primary Care Trusts'. The guide was circulated to Cancer Networks and Cancer Registries, as well as being shared as appropriate with Public Health Observatories and primary care information specialists, as well as other stakeholders mentioned in the guide.

This guide has been produced by Lucy Elliss-Brookes on behalf of the NCIN, with support from NCIN colleagues (Di Riley and David Forman) and Kathy Elliott, National Lead for Prevention, Early Diagnosis and Inequalities (NCAT).

Comments and suggestions to further develop this guide are welcomed (see the guide for further information and contact details).
