    The dangers of sunbed use have been widely publicised over recent weeks. Many news articles have highlighted the risks associated with artificial tanning and have called for tighter regulation of the rapidly growing tanning industry [1–4]. The artificial tanning industry is huge, turning over more than $1 billion per year in the USA alone [5] and seemingly continuing to grow despite warnings from health professional regarding the dangers of skin malignancy, premature aging, cataracts and burn injury [6–11].
